🏝️ Isola Bella – The Pearl of Taormina

Located at the foot of Taormina, Isola Bella is one of Sicily’s most iconic landmarks — a natural gem where land, sea, and history blend in perfect harmony. Known as “The Pearl of the Ionian Sea,” this tiny island embodies the essence of Mediterranean beauty.

🌋 Formation and Natural Wonder

Isola Bella was formed millions of years ago by tectonic movements that shaped the Ionian coast. Over time, marine currents and volcanic sediments from Mount Tauro created a narrow strip of sand — a natural tombolo — connecting the island to the mainland.
This fragile sandy link disappears and reappears with the tides, making every visit unique. The limestone rocks and the sea’s erosion have carved underwater caves and a vibrant marine ecosystem filled with colorful fish, starfish, and coral.

🏛️ History and Cultural Heritage

In the 19th century, Ferdinand of Bourbon, King of the Two Sicilies, gifted Isola Bella to the Municipality of Taormina. Later, in 1890, it was purchased by Florence Trevelyan, an English noblewoman and passionate naturalist, who transformed it into a small botanical garden.
Trevelyan introduced exotic plants from around the world and built stone pavilions that blend perfectly with the landscape. After her death, the island changed hands several times until it became a protected natural reserve, now managed by the WWF and the Sicilian Region.

🎬 Isola Bella in Art and Cinema

Throughout the centuries, Isola Bella has inspired poets, painters, and travelers — including Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who described Taormina during his Journey to Italy as “a place where sky, sea, and rock exist in perfect harmony.”
Its magical light and unique colors have also attracted filmmakers; Isola Bella has appeared in many Italian and international movies, including Le Grand Bleu (The Big Blue), becoming a timeless symbol of Mediterranean beauty.

✨ A Living Symbol of Taormina

Today, Isola Bella remains one of the most photographed and beloved sites in Sicily. Its combination of wild nature, history, and cinematic allure makes it a place beyond time — a small island that captures the soul of the Mediterranean.
